Consistency rules: the math behind the best-day percentage

A consistency rule limits how much of your total profit can come from your single best day. Divide your best day by your total profit: if the result is above the firm's limit, you don't fail, but you need more total profit before you pass or get paid. To stay under a 50% rule, your best day can be at most half of your total.

The formula

Best day ÷ total profit = consistency percentage.

Stay at or under the firm's limit and the rule is met. Go over and the target effectively moves to whatever total makes your best day small enough:

Required total profit = best day ÷ limit.

With a 50% limit and a $2,000 best day, you need $4,000 of total profit. With 40%, you need $5,000.

The big-first-day trap

You start a 50K eval with a $3,000 target and a 50% rule. Day one goes great: +$2,200. Feels like you're nearly done. You aren't:

The bigger your first day, the further away the finish line gets. That's why a cap on your own daily profit can be smarter than a cap on your loss.

Turn the rule into a daily cap

Before you start, divide the target by the number of days you're willing to trade and keep each day under the firm's limit:

Close the platform when you hit the cap. The next day is part of the plan, not a lost opportunity.

Practice it

Apex's 50% payout consistency is calculated in the simulator for every PA. For eval-stage rules the simulator doesn't model yet, keep a running "best day ÷ total" number in your journal while you practice.

Questions people actually ask

Does breaking a consistency rule fail the account?

At the firms we track, no. It raises the profit you need before you can pass or request a payout. Check your firm's wording, but treat it as a moving target rather than a fail.

Do losing days reset my best day?

No. At Topstep, for example, losses don't reset your best day. The best day stays on the books and only a larger total profit brings the percentage down.
