Payout rules: what you need before the first withdrawal

Futures prop firms pay out once you meet three kinds of rules: enough qualifying days (often five days with a minimum profit), a balance above a buffer or safety net, and limits on each request (a minimum, a cap and a profit split). Some firms also apply a consistency rule to each payout cycle and move your drawdown when you withdraw.

Numbers are from each firm's help center as of the date above. Firms change payout rules often, and the firm's page is the one that counts.

The three things to plan for

1. The buffer. Your first payout usually needs profit above a safety level. At MyFundedFutures it's the Max Loss Limit plus $100 ($2,100 on a Builder 50K) before you can request a cent.

2. The cap. Even a big month pays out in pieces. A Topstep 50K Standard XFA caps each request at $2,000 no matter how much is in the account.

3. What the payout does to the floor. At Topstep the Maximum Loss Limit resets to $0 after every payout, so each withdrawal removes cushion. At Apex the safety net stays at the drawdown plus $100 above the start. At Alpha Futures the floor doesn't move on your first payout. This changes how big your first request should be.

A simple rule of thumb

Take your first payout only after the account can survive a normal bad week with the money taken out. If withdrawing $1,000 leaves you one bad day from the floor, take less or wait a week.

Practice it

For Apex PAs the simulator checks every payout rule on your trades: qualifying days, consistency, safety net, minimum and caps, and it closes the account after the sixth payout. Log a few payouts in practice and see how the account looks afterwards.
